The suburb was named after the Aboriginal explorer Bungaree. In 1976, the Bribie Island library opened. It had a major refurbishment just recently in 2016. Bongaree is home to Bribie Island State School and Bribie Island State High School. The Moreton Bay Regional Council operates a library service at 1 Welsby Parade.
Bongaree is the home of the Bribie Island Seaside Museum which opened in 2010. The museum opened with three permanent displays, the Matthew Flinders 1799 expedition, the life and art of Ian Fairweather, and the story of Bribie Fish and Fishing. The last display features the early 1900s fish collection of the Bribie Island Amateur Fishing Association of Queensland.
