In 1872, George Stretton operated a post office in the suburb from his accommodation house. The Browns Plains School opened in 1878 but closed in 1902 due to effects of major drought. In 1938, telephone lines were installed in Greenbank and Browns Plains. The name “Browns Plains” is generally used for all suburbs utilising the 4118 Postcode, namely Hillcrest, Forestdale, Regents Park, and Heritage Park.
The main waterway in the suburb is Scrubby Creek, a tributary to Slacks Creek. The Grand Plaza Shopping Centre opened in 1994. Browns Plains contains a number of schools and shops. It is also a terminus for for Brisbane city bus routes which makes it an important transport hub.
