Chermside West is located 1okm from Brisbane central business district. It is surrounded by the suburbs Bridgeman Downs, Aspley, Chermside, Kedron, Stafford, Everton Park, and McDowall. “Craigslea” was the former name for the parts that are known as Chermside West. Chermside West uses the name “Chermside” in honour of the Queensland Governor, Sir Herbert Chermside. In 1864, Edgar Huxtable surveyed the site of the future Chermside area. 

Fast forward to the 1950s, West Chermside started to change. The small farm sector was fading as economies of scale began to drive industries like dairying and poultry farming towards larger production requiring bigger land holdings. In 1956, William Basnett, a dairy farmer of West Chermside, challenged the Council in the Land Court. Basnett won the right to subdivide his property into building blocks instead of being part of the proposed Green Belt. In 1969, the Telegraph reported that the settlement was referred to as “Nappy Valley” before a more elegant name was chosen. 

West Chermside was finally gazetted in 1975. Some notable people from Chermside West include Michael Doohan and Nigel Parodi. Doohan began his career in 1984 at Surfers Paradise Raceway on the Gold Coast and eventually won five consecutive 500cc World Racing World Champion from 1994 to 1998. Parodi attended Brisbane Grammar School before working in the North Queensland and the Northern Territory.
