Eight Mile Plains is one of Brisbane’s first suburbs to be settled. It is located 14.38km south-southeast of the Brisbane central business district and is surrounded by suburbs Macgregor, Rochedale, Rochedale South, Runcorn, Sunnybank, and Underwood. The suburb’s name was given early in the settlement and refers to the area’s flat topography as well as its eight-mile distance from One Mile Swamp, now known as Woolloongabba. 

The suburb originally extended beyond the boundary of the City of Brisbane along the Pacific Highway (Logan Road) into the northern part of Albert Shire (now Logan City). In 1861, nearly 8000 acres in the nearby Coopers Plains area had been proclaimed the Brisbane Agricultural Reserve. In 1864, the area was extended by a further 5,500 acres and the Eight Mile Plains Agricultural Reserve was formed. It comprised of Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Runcorn, Kuraby, Eight Mile Plains, as well as parts of Coopers Plains, Algester, and Stretton. 

The most popular heritage listing in Eight Mile Plains is Hughesville, which is located on 2497 Logan Road. It is a heritage-listed residence located on the corner of Logan and Padstow Road. It was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Other landmarks that are located in the suburb are the Brisbane Technology Park (BTP) and Bulimba Creek. Before white settlement, Eight Mile Plains was home to a diverse range of plants and animals. Today, there are still areas of remnant bushland in the suburb and a small number of market gardens.
