Ipswich is an urban region in southeast Queensland, Australia. The suburb is located 40km from the Brisbane central business district, in the southwest area of the Brisbane central business district. The suburb is situated on the Bremer River and is surrounded by the following suburbs: Woodend, North Ipswich, East Ipswich, Tivoli, Raceview, Churchill, One Mile, and East Ipswich.
The area which is now known as Ipswich was home to many indigenous language groups, including Warpai tribe, Yuggera, and Ugarapul Indigenous Australian Groups before the arrival of the European settlers. The town began in 1827 as a limestone mining settlement and was named “The Limestone Hills” which was eventually shortened to “Limestone”.
In 1843, the area was renamed after the town of Ipswich in England. Schools in the suburb include Ipswich Grammar School, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, and University of Southern Queensland. The major public hospital in the suburb is Ipswich Hospital but the suburb is also home to St Andrew’s Private Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Springfield. The Ipswich Railway Station is a major hub for rail transport.
