Moorooka is a suburb of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. The suburb is located 7km south of Brisbane’s central business district. Surrounding Moorooka are the suburbs Yeronga, Yeerongpilly, Rocklea, Salisbury, Tarragindi, and Annerley. 

The suburb was founded as a stopover for journeys from Brisbane south (Logan and Albert river valleys) and southwest (Ipswich and beyond). A section of the suburb’s eastern boundary lies adjacent to Toohey Forest Park. Before becoming known as a suburb, the area was occupied by the Australian Aboriginal Jagera tribe before European settlement. It is often guessed that the area used to be a hunting ground with plentiful food and water. There have also been reports of a Bora ring, which older residents of the area recall being shown. 

The name “Moorooka” is an indigenous word which either means “ironbark”, referring to the numerous iron bark trees in the area, or “long nose”, referring to the Mt. Toohey at the suburb’s periphery. The Brisbane City Archives, a collection of local historical records, was established in Moorooka in the year of 1859. One of the heritage listings in Moorooka is the Moorooka State School in Sherley Street.
