Sunnybank Hills is one of the outer southern suburbs of Brisbane and is located 15km from the Brisbane central business district. It is one of the larger suburbs in Brisbane. Sunnybank Hills adjoins and is surrounded by Coopers Plains, Sunnybank, MacGregor, Runcorn, Calamvale, Algester, and Acacia Ridge. The suburb was originally a part of a much broader area known as Coopers Plains. 

In 1885, the Railway line was extended from Yeerongpilly and the new railway stations had to be given names. One of the stations took 2 acres of land from a local farm called Sunny Brae and so the railway station took the name as well. “Brae” is a Scottish word which translates to the English word, “bank.” The area was given boundaries and was then named Sunnybank. Despite being unofficially named “Sunnybank Hills” for many decades, Sunnybank Hills was only officially defined in 1971. 

The Sunnybank Hills Public Library opened in 1987 and had a major refurbishment recently in 2009. Sunnybank Hills is abundant in ridges and hills with lower wetter areas in the northern and eastern areas. These form the marshes near Sunnybank and Runcorn railway stations. The suburb is also home to various parks and green spaces.
