Tarragindi is a suburb on the southern side of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia and is located 11.5km from the Brisbane central business district. Other suburbs that surround Tarragindi are Annerley, Greenslopes, Mount Gravatt, Holland Park West, Nathan, Moorooka, and Salisbury. Tarragindi is represented by the Holland Park and Moorooka Ward councilors on the Brisbane City Council.

 Before the European occupation in the 19th century, the area was inhabited by Aboriginal people. The Coorparoo sub-group of the wider Jagera group occupied land south of the Brisbane River clustered around Oxley, Norman, and Bulimba creeks. It’s also possible that the Yerongpan sub-group lived in the area. The Coorparoo group had cultural links to other neighboring communities including territorially neutral pathways, ceremonies, and river crossings. A bora ring was known to have been maintained in Tarragindi, possibly between present-day Barnehurst and Isabella Streets. 

One trace of the early occupation that persists in the locality is a creek named “Ekibin.” According to Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (2003), the name “Ekibin” was derived from the aboriginal “Yekkabin”, which is the name of aquatic plants with edible roots that grew in the creek. The European settlement began in 1857. An early land-owner, Thomas Stephens, established a wool scour and later a fellmongery in the northern part of the suburb near Essie Avenue.
