Wacol is a large suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The suburb is located on the east side of the Brisbane River and is 18km southwest of the Brisbane central business district on the Brisbane-Ipswich railway line. The Wacol suburb is surrounded by the following suburbs: Riverhills, Sumner, Darra, Richlands, Forest Lake, Carole Park, Ellen Grove, Goodna, Gailes, and Moggill. 

In 1852, the Wolston House was opened. Today, the building is still intact and is the only surviving building from the early Brisbane River settlement. It was planned to be demolished a while back but the National Trust of Queensland intervened and the building was saved. Major conservation work has been taken since. The Wolston railway, named after the Wolston House, was opened on October 8, 1874. 

The name was later changed on July 8, 1927, due to confusion with the railway station. The name was changed to Wacol, formed from the weight bridge for a coal to the railway station. The suburb eventually got its name from the railway station. The Wolston post office was opened in 1888 while the Carole Park primary school became operational in 1904. The Wolston Park cricket ground opened its gates in 1909. During the Second World War, Wacol served as a host to the American military by constructing Camp Columbia in 1942. 

After the war, the control of Camp Columbia was passed to the Australian government which they used for migrant reception and training. Among the heritage listings in the suburb are Wolston Park Hospital on 60 Grindle Road and Wolston House on 223 Grindle Road. Wacol is also home to a number of correctional centres such as Brisbane Correctional Centre, Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, Brisbane Youth Detention Centre, Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre, and Wolston Correctional Centre. Wacol also has a mental institution that has been operating since 1865, known as The Park Centre for Mental Health. 

Wacol has been the home of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals since it moved from Fairfield in 2011. The suburb is also home to a significant industrial park. Transportation in the suburb is made easy by the number of motorways and modes of transportation in the area. Ipswich Motorway crosses the suburb and was upgraded in 2010. The Logan Motorway connects the south of Wacol to the Ipswich Motorway.
