The suburb is located on the west side of the Albert River. Since 2008, it has been part of Logan City but it was originally located in Gold Coast City. The suburb was named after the Windaroo sugar plantation. Windaroo has two primary schools located near the suburb, built in 1992 and in 1994. The Rivermount College was built in 1992. The Windaroo Country Club hosted the Queensland Golf Open during 1992 to 1995.
