Yeronga is a residential suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located on the Brisbane River, 7km south of Brisbane central business district. The suburb is surrounded by St Lucia, Dutton Park, Fairfield, Annerley, Moorooka, Yeerongpilly, Tennyson, and Indooroopilly. The name “Yeronga” is thought to be either derived from the Aboriginal words “yarung” which means sandy or gravelly and “ba” meaning place or that it derives from the name “Yerong-lea”, the residence of Charles Hardie Buzacott (1835-1918), an Australian journalist, publisher, and politician.

 Yeronga’s first inhabitants of the Yeronga area were the Jagera people, whose traditional country is located on the southern side of the Brisbane River. The first Europeans, Thomas Pamphlett, John Finnigan, and Richard Parsons, passed through the Brisbane region. In 1854, the first recorded land sale occurred. By 1859, Queensland became a separate colony and the second land sale occurred in 1861. 

When local government was established, the Yeronga suburb became part of the Stephens Shire Council area. In 1925, this and other councils amalgamated to form the Brisbane City Council. The suburb was originally used for agricultural purposes and dairy farms were established, especially on the fertile riverside and adjacent floodplains. During the mid-1950s, the last farm in Yeronga was subdivided for residential use. There used to be a series of lagoons adjacent to the river and they were initially used as rubbish tips to expand the area.

 Once these lagoons were filled, they were topped with clay and became parks. This explains the relatively large area of parkland, sports field, and open space adjacent to the river in Yeronga today. Yeronga is also home to an area locally known as “O Zone”.
