Willawong is an outer suburb of Brisbane, Australia. It is located 16km south of the Brisbane and is surrounded by Durack, Archerfield, Acacia Ridge, Algester, Palla, Doolandella, and Inala. In 1970, the suburb was given an official name by the Places Name Board.
“Willawong” is an aboriginal word that means “the junction of two creeks”. Willawong’s boundary is largely defined by Oxley Creek and Blunder Creek. The Sydney-Brisbane Rail is aligned along the eastern edge of the suburb. The area covered by Willawong is flat and has a very rural feel.
One of the Brisbane Transport bus depots is located in the suburb. Most of the suburb was inundated during the 1974 Brisbane flood. In 1983, the local residents in Willawong and other nearby suburbs began a campaign to stop sand mining in the area. The suburb once contained a toxic waste dump but it was closed in 1998.
