Ascot is one of the well-established suburbs in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and is located right next to Clayfield and Hendra. Other suburbs that are located on the border of Ascot are Brisbane Airport, Eagle Farm, Hamilton, and Albion. Ascot was originally occupied by the Aboriginal Turrbal clan. The Turrbal clan referred to the area as “Yowogerra”, which means Corroboree Place. During the Second World War, several buildings were used by Gen. Douglas MacArthur and the Central Bureau, which had its headquarters at “Nyrambla” in 21 Henry Street. In 1942, MacArthur moved his headquarters to Queen Street in Brisbane city. 

The Central Bureau work of intercepting and decoding Japanese intelligence remained in Ascot. During the 1990s, the old servants’ quarters of “Nyrambla” were home to the late Australian actor Billie Brown who was an honorary ambassador for Queensland for his stage work in the Queensland Theatre Company in Brisbane and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1882, a railway line branch was extended from Eagle Junction Eagle Farm Racecourse in Ascot due to the popularity of horse races and in 1899, the first electric tram service was extended to Ascot. The trams which ran from Hamilton along Racecourse Road, Lancaster Road, and terminated in Alexandra Road continued until 1969. 

The Ascot railway station Doomben railway station provides access to Citytrain services. The suburb is home to a number of heritage listings including Eagle Farm Racecourse and Ascot Railway Station, Musket Villa, Ascot State School, Chateau Nous, and Windermere. The Windermere house has one of the longest family histories in Ascot. It was built by the founder of the Ascot suburb James Sutherland for his daughter. Ascot has a kindergarten on Kitchener Road, a preschool on Barlow Street, and a primary school on Pringle Street. The only private school in the neighborhood that provides education from years pre-prep to twelve is St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School.
